Improving Home Energy Efficiency With Replacement Windows
The fight to manage our energy bills is an ongoing battle – and whilst there is only so much we can do to influence how much our utility companies charge us per unit, directly improving the energy efficiency of our homes can make a dramatic difference in the price we pay.
The team here at the Window Advice Centre are glazing consultants with over 40 years of experience in providing double glazing advice services across Scotland. We’re in a unique position to show you just how much new windows could benefit you by improving the comfort of your home and reducing your energy bills. So, without further ado, let us tell you how we can assist.
The Structure of Double Glazing
When we refer to double glazing, we mean any window that has two separate panes of glass instead of one. Whilst this technology isn’t new, it is continually being improved which makes it better and better as the years go by.
The secret to the effectiveness of double glazing is the layer of air that is sandwiched between each pane of glass in uPVC windows – acting as an effective insulator and preventing the transfer of energy. It is this layer of insulation that is going to help your property retain as much of the energy produced by your heating system as possible.
In addition to air, there are several other inert gasses which can be injected into this air pocket to increase efficiency:
- Argon is commonly used as it has a thermal conductivity level which is 34% lower than air. This translates into 34% less heat being transferred and lost through your windows.
- Other inert gasses which are fit for purpose include xenon and krypton.
It is clear to see just how much of an impact a simple window replacement can have to your home.
The Benefits of Replacing Windows in Scotland
Once your new windows are fitted, you should notice that your home becomes cooler during the summer months yet warmer during the colder months. The effect of this is that you will be able to reduce the temperature of your thermostat as less energy will be required to maintain your desired internal temperature.
You will also notice that your home environment is generally more comfortable and less prone to draughts and large temperature fluctuations.
